More About Morganites
Morganite is a member of the beryl family, with emerald, aquamarine, heliodor and others as siblings. The Morganite variety of beryls are usually a peach or pink color and they make beautiful, durable jewelry.
Morganites were named after J.P. Morgan and discovered by George Kuntz, the same man that discovered Kunzite (Spodumene). Kutz discovered the "rose beryl" in Madagascar in 1910, and proposed the name morganite at a meeting of the New York Academy of Sciences to honor his friend and benefactor J.P. Morgan for his financial support, and his gifts of gems to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. When George Kunz discovered Kunzite in San Diego County in 1902, Tiffany & Co. named it "Kunzite" and J.P. Morgan felt slighted. The very next discovery was the rose beryl and happily named Morganite.
Today, Morganite is used by designers all over the world and makes spectacular and durable jewelry.
