What exactly is a Morganite? 

Morganites are part of the beryl family, like emeralds, aquamarines, heliodors (golden yellow), goshenite (clear), blue beryl (medium to light blue) and green beryl (light mint green).  Morganites are often called 'pink emeralds'.  They have a beautiful, vitreous luster and are usually a peach, blush or peachy pink color.  They were discovered in San Diego County, CA, are named after J. P. Morgan.  They are hard - 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs' Scale, so they make durable jewelry.
