Danburite & Diamond Ring

This ring features a round brilliant (rare) Danburite set among high-quality diamonds in solid 14K rose gold. Danburite has a vitreous luster.

We call it a 'mirror-like' gemstone as it has strong reflective properties (you will note that the photographs were taken in direct sunlight, and with the absence of color, this gemstone is reflecting the color of the sky). When you put a Danburite in a gold setting, it will mirror the color of the gold.

What is a Danburite?

Danburite is not a well-known mineral yet, but is rapidly growing in popularity. Danburite was originally discovered digging the foundation of a building in the city of Danbury, Connecticut in the 1850s. They thought they discovered diamonds, but it turned out to be a completely new species of gemstone. Ironically, they never found any more danburite in Danbury. Danburite has an extremely vitreous luster.  It is similar to a morganite and is just spectacular in jewelry. Currently, there are only a few places in the world where quality danburite is mined: Burma and Mexico are the best and Mexico has the superior quality.  There have been no larger facetable gemstones found recently.

Danburite in clean gem form is extremely rare in nature.   Clean material is no longer mined in appreciable quantities. Moreover, clean facet-grade pink danburite is no longer mined. Mining of top facet-grade crystals ceased over 3 years ago. What is currently being mined is a low to medium grade cabochon and collector’s grade material or crystals on matrix only (matrix is the indigenous rock that the gemstone mineral grows with).
