What are Spinels?

Spinels are much rarer than rubies and sapphires, yet less expensive (most of the world still doesn't know about these rare beauties).   The minerals that comprise spinel are very similar to rubies and sapphires (corundum), and they are often found together.  Spinels are hard, and make fantastic gemstones in jewelry.  In the Crown Jewels of England, the Black Prince's Ruby was recently discovered to be a Spinel and not a ruby.
